A Little Moan About… Local Builders Merchants / Suppliers

Today I thought I’d have a little moan about the prices of building materials around where I live and the lack of choice / selection available to me, a non-trade ordinary DIYer.

For the past year or so, I have slowly been renovating and landscaping my back yard (a process which is still on going) and in that time I’ve had the need to order quite a large quantity of  supplies like timber, large bags of sand, gravel, ballast and cement etc from local building suppliers and I have to say that I really struggle to either find what I need or find what I need at a reasonable price. Most of my transactions have felt like I’ve been held to ransom because of this.

For example, I’m currently trying to find a source of Dense Hollow Concrete Blocks at a reasonable price. I can find companies on the internet offering 140mm wide blocks in packs of 48 for £62 (£1.30 per block) but they don’t deliver to my area and locally, I can only find one or two places that stock them and those that do are asking stupid prices per block ranging from £2.00 – £4.00!

What annoys me is that the company I found online with these blocks at a great price isn’t a big massive nationwide company with mega buying power so how is it they can sell these blocks at such a low price where all the big companies are charging silly money? I wont mention any names so you’ll just have to use your imagination as to which companies I mean.

Now it may not sound like a big deal for a few blocks but when we’re talking 100, 200, 500 etc it’s a massive slice of money!

So my choices are: Find a different approach, pay the extortionate asking prices or leave it.

Sometimes I really hate where I live for it’s lack of choice / competition. It seems like everything I want I cannot get and those things I can get are always over-priced.
